I’ve always enjoyed outdoor adventure and was very lucky that my wife – Sarah – was equally enthusiastic. We have had the privilege to live, work in and visit amazing places around the world and we have often been given tips on fun places to go and exciting walks to do.
I have found that demanding walking in beautiful places goes way beyond just physical exercise. As the body gains fitness, the sense of well-being grows and worries drop away. The rhythmic walking and the steady progression through the countryside allows for real ‘active meditation’, in which worries drop away and the mind, body and soul become enriched and refreshed.
Friends and acquaintances have often asked us to give them advice when they are planning trips and we have loved spending time pulling together routes, maps, photos and guide books for them. As we have received ‘gifts’ of advice from those who have told us about great places to go, so I feel we can gift others by sharing where we have gone. So nothing brings greater pleasure than to hear that someone has had a fantastic adventure because of what we have passed on.
Having retired, I thought it would be fun to pull some of these together and share them more widely through this blog.
These are not meant to be definitive guides to walks with every twist and turn noted (I have given links to these sorts of guides). They are meant to spark ideas for the kind of adventures you could have and the beautiful places you could experience.
In addition, I’m going to add some pages outlining some of the trips we have done, highlighting some of the lovely wines we have come across on our walks, and giving some hints and tips on kit that have helped us.
I hope you enjoy them as much as we do, and the experience gets you looking for more places to explore……and share with others yourself.
